The Effects of Parallel Capacitors in a Reactive Compensating Filter Device on Voltage non-sinusoidality and Current Resonance

Parallel capacitors together with LC-tuned filters are used for reactive power compensation and higher harmonic suppression in distribution networks. The results of this paper show that the application of parallel capacitors cause current resonance at non-filtered harmonic frequencies. The effects of capacitance division among tuned filters and parallel capacitors on the network frequency characteristic and current resonance intensity and network voltage distortion are investigated. This paper confirms a design method for eliminating current resonance at non-filtered harmonic frequencies.
